I’m a fan of spicy fast food. Taco Bell’s Volcano menu has always been a favorite of mine, so I was super intrigued to explore Burger King’s new Fiery menu. They have several items available, and I tried three. The Fiery Strawberry & Sprite, the Fiery Mozzarella Fries, and the Fiery Chicken Fries. That’s partly because this is a soda and French fry blog, and partly because there was a limit to how much I wanted to invest in my local Burger King.

Let’s start out with my favorite item, the Fiery Strawberry & Sprite drink. I’ve had spicy sodas before, and this one was pretty great. Sprite is sort of spicy already in its own way due to the high level of carbonation, but there’s just a touch of heat to the strawberry syrup/puree that they add to this. It’s not overwhelming, and overall it tastes more sweet than spicy. If this became a permanent menu item it’s what I would get as my drink most of the time. It’s amazing what a touch of heat or acid can do to something that is predominantly sugary. Although it’s a simple concept, I give the Fiery Strawberry & Sprite an A-.

I think I liked the Fiery Chicken Fries a little bit more than the Fiery Mozzarella Fries. I purchased the Fiery Fry Try which include four Fiery Chicken Fries, four Fiery Mozzarella Fries, four regular Chicken Fries, and four regular Mozzarella Fries. Not a bad way to try out these sides, especially for $7.

Chicken on the left, Mozzarella on the right

I had never had the regular Mozzarella Fries before. I assumed they would taste exactly like Mozzarella Sticks, and I wasn’t far off. The mozzarella tastes very cheap and has a gummy texture. No cheese pull whatsoever. There’s also a bit too much breading to cheese, so the ratio isn’t my preference. The regular ones are predominantly salty, but there is a touch of herbs in the crust that give it a slightly Italian vibe. The Fiery Mozzarella Sticks didn’t have a different discernible flavor other than “spicy”. They weren’t very hot (maybe a 2 out of 5?), but I don’t think they were any worse than the regular ones. Overall, I just don’t like the concept of Mozzarella Fries and the fiery variant didn’t change my mind. Grade: C-.

UPDATE! I tried the Fiery Mozzarella Fries again, but this time I ate them immediately after picking up the order in the drive-thru. They were dramatically better than the first time I tried them, and they’re now my favorite item on the menu. I’m keeping the original review above, but these were spicy, the cheese was gooey, and overall I’d say that these are a quality fast food side. Grade: A!

The Fiery Chicken Fries were a little better than the mozzarella fries in the first order. My guess is that I liked this texture more because I had no expectation of anything different. I thought it would be like a long skinny chicken nugget, and I was right. They taste a bit dry, and there’s too much breading to chicken, but they’re salty and easy to dip. The regular ones are very bland, but the Fiery Chicken Fries were just a little more interesting. Maybe the mozzarella mutes the flavor of the other ones, because the chicken ones seemed a little bit more spicy (a 2.2 out of 5?). These were far from great, but they were better than the Mozzarella fries. A long time ago I tried the Cheetos Chicken Fries, and those were far superior to this. Grade: C.

A few days later I tried the Fiery Bacon Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich (that’s literally a mouthful). It was a well balanced fast food chicken sandwich, and I really enjoyed the kick of heat with the tangy tomatoes, the salty bacon, and the spicy/creamy sauce. The chicken was moist, and it was super enjoyable. Grade: B+.

After tasting that, and trying the Fiery Mozzarella Fries again, I might reorder my preferences to Fiery Mozzarella Fries first, then the chicken sandwich, then the Sprite, then the chicken fries.

I still haven’t tried the Fiery Bacon Whopper. Maybe another day.
