After trying Fluffy Dr Pepper with both Marshmallow Fluff and Marshmallow Creme I wanted to see if a Fluffy Coke was better or worse. But why stop there? I expanded the experiment to include a few other sodas and I was genuinely surprised by the results. My set of five sodas included Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut, Coca Cola, Boylan Root Beer, and Malta Goya. I used Marshmallow Fluff for all of them for consistency.
Here are my general observations before I dive into each individual soda. First observation, Marshmallow Fluff kills carbonation. Every single one of these went flat the second I poured it over the fluff. This is also true with floats, but you’re typically trading carbonation for creaminess. Fluffy sodas aren’t really creamy, and I think you’d be better off with a marshmallow flavored syrup. Second observation, it’s a mess. You have to smear the fluff all over the inside of the glass and only part of it is dissolving in the soda. So much of this seems to be about the show rather than the result. To each their own, but I’m providing my ranking from best to worst for the five variants I tried.

#1 – Fluffy Root Beer
This worked. I could still taste the root beer, similar to how you can still taste root beer in a root beer float. It was muted, but it paired well with the marshmallow flavor. Sodalicious (a soft drink chain around Utah and Idaho) sells a root beer drink called a “Boy Scout” that has the same idea with a better execution. They add toasted marshmallow syrup to Barq’s root beer, and it’s great! If this flavor is what you’re after, then I’d recommend using a flavored syrup (like this one from Torani). I didn’t mind the Fluffy Root Beer being flat as much as I did with other drinks, and I think that’s because my brain is tuned to accept flat root beer in a float. It just wasn’t a problem. I used Boylan root beer, but I think my result would be the same with most brands.

#2 – Fluffy Dr Pepper Creamy Coconut
What I appreciated about this one was that there a separate discernible flavor. I smelled the coconut with the glass a few inches from my nose, and the flavor carried through on top of the hint of marshmallow from the fluff. While the sodas were all sweet, the Creamy Coconut was a little too sweet. The lack of carbonation may have also been a factor in that perception because there was nothing to liven it up. I’m ranking this one second overall, but that doesn’t mean I liked it very much. Just more than the others.

#3 – Fluffy Coke
I’m pretty sure this is where the trend actually started before people pivoted to Dr Pepper. Fluffy Coke was okay, and the marshmallow paired well with the caramel notes that remained after losing carbonation. Coca Cola on its own tastes sharp to me, and the marshmallow fluff mellowed it out a lot. Had there been some carbonation left I could have enjoyed it, but I would have been happier with a plain Coke all by itself. Flat Coke isn’t great.

#4 – Fluffy Dr Pepper
We’ve done this combo a couple times already, but I’ll refresh my thoughts here. It’s not good. Dr Pepper is one of the best commercial sodas you can get, especially in the “cola-adjacent” category. This should work, but it doesn’t. The marshmallow fluff neutralizes anything interesting from Dr Pepper and you’re left with a boring, flat, and overly sweet drink. Why bother? I might try this with marshmallow syrup at some point, but I’ve had more than enough Fluffy Dr Pepper over the last week. I need a break!

#5 – Fluffy Malta
It’s not like I expected this to be good. I want to like Malta (and other malted barley drinks) because they’re culturally relevant to a lot of places (the Caribbean, some African countries, etc.) but I’m struggling to appreciate the flavor and texture. I’ll keep trying. Malta Goya itself has a funk to it with a flavor highlighted by malt, hops, and salt. It tastes like a fizzy soy sauce mixed with molasses. Combining that with marshmallow fluff was a nightmare. It created a THICK foam that looked like a cappuccino, but the earthy/salty/sweaty undertones of Malta fought their way through. This was terrible, and I’m a terrible person for making it.
Conclusion
If you like fluffy sodas, then keep drinking them. They look fun, and there is something compelling about marshmallow flavor in a sparkling beverage. This formula isn’t working for me but that doesn’t mean it can’t be perfect for you. I recorded a video of my experiment, although I had to remove most of my commentary to keep it under 60 seconds, but I should have just filmed it horizontally and done a longer video. Let me know what you think about fluffy sodas!
