Krispy Kreme announced a collaboration with Dr Pepper to “kick-off” the new football season. As a Dr Pepper fan, I’m obligated to review this mashup and let you know if it’s worth your time.

First, a warning. The Krispy Kreme x Dr Pepper KickOff Collection comes with a variety of 3 doughnuts. Only one has any connection to Dr Pepper whatsoever, and it’s just a Dr Pepper flavored frosting on top of the raised glazed ring. The other two are football themed with a filled football shape and another ring with a goal post and sprinkles. The goal post one that I received was a strong deviation from the advertisement, but it tasted like a doughnut. That’s good enough for most. The football shaped doughnut is “KREME™” filled, and also tasted like a doughnut.

From the Krispy Kreme press release

The Dr Pepper doughnut had a very mild Dr Pepper flavor in the frosting, which was better than no Dr Pepper flavor. I wasn’t super satisfied, though. When I heard rumors about this collaboration I expected it to be similar to the Cheerwine effort that Krispy Kreme has offered in the past. That included a filled doughnut flavored like the soda, as seen below (note, this was from 2021). The Dr Pepper frosting felt a bit weak to to me, but I’m sure it was much easier to roll out.

Before that, Cheerwine introduced a Krispy Kreme flavor for their soda. They sent me a sample of that 7 years ago and I wrote up a review. I liked it, but I haven’t seen any mention of a doughnut flavored Dr Pepper variety in the works.

To satisfy my curiosity, I decided to not only try the doughnut that Krispy Kreme offered, but also try to make my own version of the a Dr Pepper filled doughnut. It wasn’t great, but that’s mostly my fault. I took it a step further and made my own Krispy Kreme infused Dr Pepper drink. That was fantastic, as you can see in the accompanying video:
