Leading up to the release of How to Train Your Dragon (the 2025 live action remake), Burger King launched a specially themed menu in partnership with the brand. There’s an obvious connection between fire-breathing dragons and flame-grilled burgers, but I was interested to see how creative the King would get with this collaboration.

There are four menu items offered as part of the special menu. Conveniently, you can buy them all as part of the Flame & Flight Combo meal. Per Burger King’s descriptions, the four items are:

  • Dragon Flame-Grilled Whopper – The star of the show features a 1/4 lb* of flame-grilled beef served on a red-and-orange-marbled bun colored with natural spices and vegetables, topped with American cheese, crispy bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, ketchup and mayo.
  • Fiery Dragon Mozzarella Fries – In addition to bringing the flame, BK is bringing the heat with Fiery Dragon Mozzarella Fries, featuring melty mozzarella cheese, peppers and Fiery Calabrian chili pepper-breading for the perfect fiery snack served in a one-of-a-kind Toothless-inspired carton.
  • Soaring Strawberry Lemonade – Soar to new heights and quench your thirst for adventure with the all-new Soaring Strawberry Lemonade, made with real fruit juice**.
  • Viking’s Chocolate Sundae – Finish the adventure with Viking’s Chocolate Sundae, a delicious sweet treat featuring a vanilla soft-serve with HERSHEY’S® chocolate syrup and black & green cookie crumbles.

Perhaps the biggest creative achievement with this special menu is the redesigned serving box for the speciality fries. As long as you order a medium or a large (8 piece or 12 piece) of the mozzarella fries, you should receive the “Toothless” box with dragon wings extending from the top. It’s very cute. I don’t have scientific evidence to back this up, but I think that you could literally be toothless and still enjoy these mozzarella fries. With that said, let’s talk about the food.

Fiery Dragon Mozzarella Fries – These were my favorite of the four food items. It’s critical that you eat them fresh because they DO NOT travel well, or long. That “melty mozzarella cheese” quickly becomes a solidified stick once the temperature goes down. My estimate is that it you have about 4 to 5 minutes to enjoy them at their best, and then they become unpleasant. When they’re fresh, they’re spectacular. The calabrian chili pepper-breading contributes to an attractive color, but also a spicy kick that’s calmed by the cheese. If they were thicker they might be able to survive a big longer, but that’s part of the gimmick of having a “fry” instead of a “stick” for the cheesy side. I wish there was a unique sauce to pair with these as well. Ranch is fine, but a Romesco sauce, or mojo, or salsa brava could have been really interesting with the Calabrian chiles.

Dragon Flame-Grilled Whopper – The most distinctive element of this burger is the marbled orange and red bun. It’s colored with natural spices/vegetables, and it looks great. Burger King has done colored buns with other promotional menus, and I’ve generally found them to be a bit dense and mushy. I think this is because they can’t be served quite as fresh as the standard buns and probably need more preservatives or dough conditioners. I noticed that with this red/orange bun as well, but it wasn’t as extreme as others from the past. It was visually stunning, though. Beyond the attractive bun, there wasn’t much else to note about this burger. It was a standard bacon cheeseburger, which is slightly unusual for a Whopper (they don’t come with cheese or bacon by default), but it tasted good. Something I like about Whoppers is that they’re wider than other “big” burgers, which makes them easier to eat than their taller competitors. I’ll take a wide burger over a tall burger every day of the week.

Viking’s Chocolate Sundae – I ordered two meals and only received one sundae. It wasn’t clear what the issue was, but they told me that they couldn’t make the second one. I accepted a Hershey Pie as a substitute, and I went on with my day. The sundae is just a standard soft-serve sundae with Hershey syrup and some crumbled cookies. I guess the crumbled cookies look like dirt or rocks or something and that makes them Viking? Whatever. It tasted fine. How could it not? This isn’t their fault, but by the time I got home with my food the sundae had halfway melted into a dessert soup. That didn’t hurt the flavor much, just the texture. I had intended to eat it in the parking lot, but while I was taking pictures of the food there was a wild police raid right next to my car. Several unmarked police SUV’s sped into the parking lot, boxed in a humongous fancy RV, and then cuffed the occupant on the hood of their car. I decided that that was a good time for me to leave.

Soaring Strawberry Lemonade – I’ll be brief on this one. It’s lemonade with a little bit of fruit goo (I’m assuming it’s strawberry goo). While it tasted nice, I don’t get the connection to the movie other than the decorative cup.

Summary

Overall, I think that the How to Train your Dragon menu is solid, and if you buy the Flight & Flame combo meal you’ll get a great deal. I just wish that it was more creative. How could this be more Viking inspired? Could Burger King have made a mutton burger, or maybe Herring Fries instead of mozzarella fries? Maybe some cabbage. That would have been really popular.
