There have been leaks about this flavor for a long time, but the limited edition A&W Ice Cream Sundae Soda is officially out in the wild. I found 12 packs available at Target on July 27, 2025, but no where else (yet). Worth noting that I’m also in Washington State and it seems like we’re always some of the last to get this stuff.

I’m a big fan of A&W Root Beer. They’ve been around since 1919, helped changed the culinary history of the United States with massive roll-out of their root beer and burger drive-ins in the mid 1900’s, and continue to set the standard of American root beer. Their cream soda is also good, but I wasn’t sure what to expect from an Ice Cream Sundae flavored soda.

I picked up a twelve pack of cans in both the regular version and the sugar-free. There was some ambiguity in my mind about whether this would be an ice cream flavored root beer, or a tweak on the cream soda. Turns out that it’s most similar to the cream soda, but it’s very much its own thing. The first flavor you get is vanilla ice cream, and it’s a really close approximation. The next flavor you get is a fudgey chocolate syrup. It tastes like Hershey’s. There aren’t really any mainstream sodas that use chocolate as a flavoring (except for the limited edition Oreo Coca-Cola), so this really stands out. As the two flavors settle on your tongue you really do get the essence of an ice cream sundae, so I think they nailed it.

It also reminds me a little bit of an Egg Cream. Those are made with seltzer water, milk, and Fox’s U-Bet Chocolate Syrup. While the fully-sugared version is 150 calories, I didn’t think it was too sweet. I actually expected it to be much more cloying than it is. Overall, I liked it, and the sugar-free version wasn’t bad either. It tastes a bit lighter than the regular one, but it’s not too much of a sacrifice as long as you don’t mind the taste of the artificial sweetener.

Again, I found the boxes at Target, but you should be able to find it at your grocery store before long. Please let me know what you think, and if there’s anything you’d like me to try next.
