Update 6/2/2017: I moved my rating from an 8 to a 9. I love these fries. I’ll explain a bit more at the bottom of the post.

Have I reached Kennebec potato peak? No! I can’t even see the top of this mountain, and I don’t want to. These fries were fantastic and I believe part of their success should be attributed to their choice of potato…the majestic Kennebec.

Sunset Fried Chicken Sandwiches is tucked into the corner of Rachel’s Ginger Beer on 12th Avenue on Capitol Hill in Seattle. No kidding, it’s more like a doorway than a restaurant. The fried chicken sandwiches are juicy and delicious, but on this visit I was on a mission to sample their Kennebec potato french fries.

At about 10mm these are a fairly thick fry with a bit of skin left on. The seasoning is generous enough to satisfy your savory tooth and simple enough to compliment the potatoes without overwhelming the natural flavor.

I don’t know what sort of oil these are fried in but they achieve a perfect blistered crust without any sort of breading. The inside of the fries are mashed potato soft which paired with the crusty shell provides a welcoming contrast. I ordered the fries with a side of their spicy mayo. I loved that lingering fire on my tongue as I finished the whole (big) basket of fries.

I loved the fries. I think they’re an absolute steal at under $5 a basket. Compare this to the tiny bag of limp fries at Dick’s ($2 a bag) just down the street and you can understand the value of this quality product. Sharing a space with Rachel’s Ginger Beer is also a stroke of genius. It’s a beautiful setting, there are phenomenal beverages, and you can’t go wrong with these fries and chicken sandwiches. An 8 out of 10 for regular fries is an honor. These fries are a 9 out of 10 on my rating scale. Since my initial review I’ve also tried their fried green tomatoes (click here), their hushpuppies (see below), and several of their sandwiches. Everything is delicious.

These are their insanely delicious hushpuppies. The texture, flavor, and aura are all perfect on these bad boys, but I don’t think they fit in with my blog categories.
