This soda is really funny to me. There’s so much push back in the beverage industry regarding the use of high fructose corn syrup in sodas, and then Rocket Fizz goes and makes a Sweet Corn Soda. With cane sugar. I’ve reviewed a lot of Rocket Fizz sodas (click here) and some of the novelty flavors have been surprisingly palatable. My prediction was that this would follow suite.

As soon as I opened the bottle I knew that my prediction was right. The smell was exactly the same as a can of sweet corn. The level of sweetness was also comparable. The taste was also very natural and familiar. It tastes like corn! I thought that it fell short of the experience of eating fresh corn on the cob (we have great corn here in Washington in August), but very comparable to canned corn. In fact, my palate was expecting a bit of salt and pepper. The fact that it wasn’t present was probably for the best. As is the Sweet Corn Soda was clean and to the point.

I would have liked a touch of salt

While I don’t see this flavor going mainstream I do think that it will appeal to corn aficionados and other curious beverage drinkers. It might actually be an interesting component to a cocktail. For me, this is a 6.9 out of 10 on my rating scale. I’m even reluctant to call it a novelty soda, but it’s the most fitting. Definitely one of the better Lester’s Fixins sodas I’ve had.

At the same time I tried the Sweet Corn Soda I also tried a Butter Soda. Then I tried them together. The butter added a little bit of texture and salt to the sweet corn, but didn’t really enhance it too much. The addition of Sweet Corn to the Butter made the Butter Soda much better, though. I wasn’t a big fan of the Butter on its own (click here), but it was still drinkable. Thanks Rocket Fizz for being so creative in the beverage world!
