You might remember my recent review of Mtn Dew Black Label. I picked that can up randomly at a grocery store and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Call it a prejudice against Mountain Dew if you want, but I didn’t expect anything close to how refreshing and nuanced it was. Mountain Dew made me a believer that they can produce a “craft” soda.
Mtn Dew White Label brought me back to earth. This isn’t good. It’s drinkable, but with so many thousands of alternatives I’m not sure why you would choose this over most other things. The White Label takes the craft dew in a tropical citrus direction which made me think that I’d get hit with some bright pineapple, passion fruit, or potentially some coconut. What I tasted was mostly just a smooth grape flavor that dissipated into a generic citrus. What really killed the drink for me was the use of Sucralose (in addition to traditional sugar). It doesn’t have the lingering sweetness of cane sugar and created an almost hollow after-taste.
I wanted Piña Colada, I got diet grape with a splash of Sunny Delight. It was mediocre at best, and I’ll settle for a 4.5 out of 10 on my rating scale.
